Logitech Web cam brings Skype to TVs

Logitech has unveiled a new high-definition Web cam for TVs, able to run Skype video conferencing software without the need for a PC, PC World reports.

The Web cam, released on Friday, runs a customised version of Skype, and comes with a remote control for controlling the Skype software and zooming images in and out. It has a wider-angle lens than traditional Web cams, Logitech said.

It perches on top of a TV and connects via HDMI. It also has an Ethernet port for Internet connectivity, and a power jack for the supplied power adapter.

This isn't Logitech's first time bringing video chat to HDTVs, according to PC Mag.

Several HDTVs from Panasonic, LG, Samsung, and other manufacturers have Skype but require a separate Webcam accessory.

The TV Cam HD joins integrated video chat devices like the Tely Labs TelyHD and Biscotti Web cams. Both devices have integrated video chat clients, with the TelyHD supporting Skype and the Biscotti supporting Google Talk and Biscotti's own video chat service.

Both Web cams have strengths and weaknesses, but neither managed to settle in as the definitive HDTV video chat device. The TV Cam HD could prove to be a stiff competitor to them, and at $199.99 costs as much as the Biscotti and is less expensive to the TelyHD.
