Airports Company SA (ACSA) has appointed Mthoko Mncwabe as its new group CIO, effective 3 July.

Mncwabe joins ACSA from the South African Post Office (SAPO) and replaces Sello Mmakau.

Mmakau, a former Department of Home Affairs CIO, served in the role at ACSA from October 2014 until his departure in April to join FSCA, formerly the Financial Services Board.

ACSA's new CIO has more than 16 years of experience in the IT industry, seven of which were spent at Absa.

As group CIO of SAPO and Postbank, Mncwabe's responsibility was to drive the national postal service's strategic technology vision, business revenue development, as well as management of business operations.

His projects included broadband deployment and IT consolidation. In addition, he promoted the post office as a hi-tech hub and looked to attract IT investment and partnerships.

Mncwabe also headed up a broad cross-section of the SAPO's cyber security efforts, including public-private partnerships to secure critical infrastructure, cyber risk management, and a system to alert government and industry of threats and response strategy.

The former SAPO group CIO holds a BSc (Mathematics), BSc (Computer Science Hons) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He also completed an MBA at Milpark Business School and an executive development programme through Absa and GIBS.
