Mobile operator MTN today suffered outages at its 4G and 5G sites and the company is investigating the cause of the problem.

Downdetector this afternoon showed a spike in MTN users reporting that they were having issues with mobile internet (56%); some 29% reported that they did not have signal; while 15% said there was a total blackout.

Complaints on Downdetector show that most parts of the country were affected by the outage.

Users took to social media platforms to vent their anger over the outage.

“@mtnza MtN network is down for over an hour. What happening?” said one MTN customer on Twitter.

“So MTN decides not to tell us the network going to down for a few hours. Mxm smh.” [sic] said the other.

Responding to ITWeb via e-mail, Jacqui O’Sullivan, executive for corporate affairs at MTN South Africa, says: “MTN would like to apologise to its customers for the network interruptions 4G and 5G some users may have experienced earlier today.”

According to O’Sullivan, the issue has been resolved and the network is returning to normal performance.

“Investigations are underway into what caused the intermittent interruptions, which affected certain VoLTE calls, some mobile calls and some data connections. We thank our customers for their patience and appreciate their ongoing support.”
