McAfee, a Network Associates business, today announced the launch of the McAfee Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team (AVERT) WebImmune service. The McAfee AVERT WebImmune service is one of the industry`s first Web-based virus research offerings for instant cures and information to combat newly discovered Internet viruses and malicious code, such as the recent LoveLetter worm and its variants.
With over 55,000 viruses in existence today and more than 550 new viruses discovered every month, e-businesses require instant protection from the newest security threats. The new WebImmune service delivers 24x7 Internet virus security, delivering real-time fixes and information for new virus submissions and inquiries. This is the latest in a series of announcements in which McAfee is delivering Web-enabled anti-virus technology and services to e-businesses. McAfee service providers (MSPs) and value added resellers (VARs) proactively manage virus security over the Internet.

The AVERT WebImmune service, based on industry leading AutoImmune technology, allows customers to submit suspect viruses and malicious code via the Internet directly to AVERT, and receive information on the submission within 60-90 seconds. If the file is malicious, the WebImmune service can automatically generate a cure and return it immediately to the customer via the Web site or by email. If the submission is inconclusive, an AVERT researcher will conduct further analysis and return conclusions to the customer within 2-6 hours.

How it works
The McAfee AVERT WebImmune service is based on the AutoImmune technology that has been utilised by AVERT labs internally for more than a year. The service automatically detects and generates cures for unknown viruses with leading heuristics technology, instantly returning the fix to customers over the Internet. The WebImmune service works by compressing, encrypting, certifying and sending the submitted suspect file to the AutoImmune server, which then authenticates the source of the virus. The AutoImmune server then automatically verifies the virus, if present, and creates a cure, which is returned immediately via the Web site. This automated process provides e-businesses with around-the-clock access to the expertise of McAfee AVERT researchers, giving customers unsurpassed service.
