Johannesburg-based fibre network distribution company Fibrehoods has upped its fibre game as it is looking to fire up Melville with aerial fibre.

Melville residents are set to enjoy high Internet speeds of up to 100Mbps, which Fibrehoods says are up to 50 times faster than the average ADSL offering.

Fibrehoods is a joint venture between RMBH Holdings and the Waterfall Investment Company established for the purposes of pursuing fibre network opportunities in the last mile, specifically focusing on fibre-to-the-home services.

Using existing street lights, aerial deployment is able to bring fibre to residents' homes faster and cheaper with easier maintenance, Fibrehoods says. Furthermore, because it is aerial, there is no trenching so pavements are not dug up to lay cables, it adds.

The company has already brought high-speed Internet to residents in Gauteng, including Craighall, Craighall Park, Dunkeld and Atholl.

Standard installation for the aerial fibre is R2 500 and data packages start at R499 for a 100Mbps line and 50GB of data.

"Fibrehoods utilises an open access network, meaning that many Internet service providers are able to offer their data packages on our network," says Alon Hendel, MD of Fibrehoods. "This means more choice for the consumer at really good prices."

Besides the fibre roll-out in Melville, Fibrehoods has also entered into a partnership with CSS Tactical to install security cameras in the suburb.

Using the Fibrehoods network, the cameras are able to monitor Melville and report on any suspicious behaviour.

The i-Sentry artificial intelligence software utilised for the monitoring of the cameras uses a smart-analysis system that learns routine and then detects and alerts the operators in the CSS Tactical control room to unusual behaviour.

"We have seen a 92% reduction in criminal activity in residential areas where these cameras have been deployed," says Ricky Croock, CEO of CSS Tactical.

The first security cameras will be live by the middle of March 2016 and a month later the first homes in Melville will be connected to the high-speed fibre network.
