The event, which unites over 2 500 international and pan-African ICT experts, government decision-makers and stakeholders, is now in its 14th year. This year’s theme is: ‘Reshaping the citizen experience through enhanced service delivery’, and will focus on Africa’s efforts to play a leading role in the fourth industrial revolution.

Including an exhibition and conference, GovTech showcases new ICT products and services, and brings together thought leaders for two days of knowledge sharing and networking. This year, the conference will focus on the increasing importance of digital technologies in public service, work and citizens’ daily lives post-COVID, assessing how digital solutions can boost economies, enable infrastructure development, support SME development and underpin youth development and health service delivery, among others. Delegates will also discuss burning issues such as cyber security and digital privacy, cloud and data sovereignty, digital inclusion and pan-African collaboration in the 4IR. Among the thought-provoking panel discussions will be AI in Africa, sustainable smart villages and cities in Africa, digital skills and the future of work, collaboration on African digital backhaul and data centres, and cyber security policy tools for Africa.

The conference will feature thought leaders and dignitaries including South Africa’s Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni; Zambia’s Minister of Science & Technology, Felix Mutati; Microsoft SA CEO Lillian Barnard; UJ Vice-Chancellor Tshilidzi Marwala; Anita Prakash of the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) at IDC; GITO Council CIO Mothibi Ramusi; and technology leaders and analysts from across Africa.

A highlight of the event is the SITA Digital Public Service Awards gala dinner sponsored by Huawei, where the annual public service awards will recognise excellence in technology deployment among public service institutions. The awards acknowledge achievement in using digital technologies for innovation, impact on citizens and society in general, and for public service transformation.

GovTech will also include an SMME Exhibition, where emerging innovators and entrepreneurs will be showcased. The GovTech Hackathon will offer nearly R200 000 in prizes to participants with the best new solutions for Africa’s socio-economic challenges using digital technology.

Tlali Tlali, head of corporate affairs at SITA, says: “GovTech is a unique platform for public service decision-makers to engage and discover new solutions and approaches to tackling our continent’s challenges and improving the lives of our citizens. As we move ever-faster towards the 4IR, collaboration will become increasingly important for the continent of Africa if we are to successfully harness emerging technologies and take our place in the global digital economy. Collaboration is necessary across borders and between sectors – including public sector, private sector and academia. Therefore, collaboration will be an overarching theme at this year’s GovTech.”

The event is supported by Microsoft SA as a lead sponsor, with Huawei, Sentech, MTN, Vodacom and In2IT as key sponsors.
