WenTech acquires McGregor`s Who Owns Whom company

By Tin Can Communications
Johannesburg, 13 Oct 1998
WenTech, a listed investor education and IT financial services company, has announced its strategic move into financial publishing with the acquisition of McGregor`s Who Owns Whom (Pty) Ltd for R1,5-Million. Under the signed agreement, WenTech will acquire 100% of the share capital of the company as well as all trademarks and copyrights.

McGregor`s Who Owns Whom business consists of six current publications namely Who Owns Whom and five other new titles which are being released simultaneously this week and are available in all national bookstores. The new books are titled: South African Company Structures, Directory Of Brand Names, Directory Of Directors, Major Unlisted Companies Of South Africa, and Who Owns Whom In Sub-Saharan Africa.

All published titles are drawn off an electronic database for which the Who Owns Whom (Pty) Ltd company has sole publishing rights for ten years.

Commenting on the acquisition, WenTech Managing Director, Paul Still says: "The acquisition provides a synergistic fit with WenTech`s future educational strategy as it compliments our investor and financial educational offerings and value-added investment services."

Still points out that educational financial services are one of the fastest growing sectors in the South Africa economy.

"We feel that WenTech is in the ideal position to lead this market into the future," he says. "Robin McGregor is a very well recognised figure in the financial publishing arena and we see him playing an integral part in the continuing success of the company in his role as Managing Director."

McGregor is a member of the Competition Board, the Standard Advisory Committee on Company Law and is on the Appeal Panel of the Press Ombudsman. McGregor feels confident that Wentech`s track record will enable it to maintain the highest standards of accuracy and professionalism that his company has upheld for over 18 years.

"Wentech has, through its various financial educational offerings established itself as a major player in the financial educational arena," he says. "Wentech can therefore make a significant contribution to this sphere of education and I am pleased to be involved."

Where market opportunities for the growth of the business are concerned, McGregor says: "It is well known that in the past, the vast majority of shares on the JSE have been owned by a limited number of shareholders. This is changing with unbundling, demutualisation and the trend for companies to focus their activities on their core business. As a result, there are a vast number of South Africans who need to be taught the fundamentals of share ownership."

Wentech`s Still says that due to the high demand from asset managers and stock brokers, publishing plans are also in the pipeline to resurrect existing titles. These titles include McGregor`s Quick Reference to the JSE -Stock Exchange Handbook, McGregor`s Glossary of Business Terms/Dictionary of StockMarket Terms, and McGregor`s Mechanics of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

"We are also going to be launching other new financial titles over the next twelve months," he adds.
