Research and advisory firm Gartner has pinpointed 10 “strategic technology trends” set to impact enterprises over the next five years.
Brian Burke, chief of research at Gartner and chairperson for 2019 Gartner Symposium/ITxpo in SA, explained the trends for 2020 have been categorised into two main areas: people-centric and smart spaces.
“A lot of these trends, as you will see, are really about how technology is integrated, impacting, enabling and augmenting people. People live in spaces, so those spaces are becoming increasingly smart with different devices…all of these are enabled by edge devices, interfaces and experiences.”
1. Hyperautomation
According to Burke, hyperautomation focuses on taking humans out of the loop where they can be taken out. It is about automating people out of low-value activities, he told the audience. Gartner says hyperautomation is to automate anything that can be automated. The number one use case for artificial intelligence (AI) is process automation.
2. Multi-experience
Gartner expects by 2021, at least one-third of enterprises will have deployed a multi-experience development platform to support mobile, Web, conversational and augmented reality development.
3. Democratisation
This is really about how advanced technology is becoming available to end-user organisations, individuals and the public at-large.
According to Gartner, there are four main challenges driving democratisation of AI. These are dealing with shadow AI, insufficient data, empowering developers to build and a lack of skills. The research firm believes by 2022, 30% of organisations using AI for decision-making will contend with shadow AI as the biggest risk to effective and ethical decisions.
4. Human augmentation
By 2025, 40% of enterprises will shift from designing for humans, to architecting humans themselves by adopting human augmentation technologies and methodologies.
5. Transparency and traceability
Gartner expects by 2023, over 75% of large organisations will hire artificial intelligence specialists in behaviour forensic, privacy and customer trust to reduce brand and reputation risk.
6. Empowered edge
Gartner reveals that by 2023, more than 50% of enterprise-generated data will be created and processed outside the data centre or cloud, up from less than 10% in 2019.
7. Distributed cloud
By 2024, the majority of cloud service platforms will provide services that execute at the point of need, show the latest tech trends as presented by Gartner.
8. Autonomous things
According to Burke, by 2025, more than 12% of the newly produced vehicles will have level three or higher autonomous driving hardware capability.
9. Practical blockchain
By 2023, blockchain-inspired technology will support the global movement and tracking of $2 trillion of goods and services annually, Gartner predicts.
10. AI security
Through 2022, 30% of all cyber attacks will leverage training data poisoning, AI model theft or adversarial samples.
