Vodacom’s music streaming app My Muze has notched up almost one million app installations in the few months since it went live.

The digital music platform was officially unveiled during the South African Music Awards nominee announcement event in April.

It provides users with access to over 30 million songs and allows subscribers to catch up on music industry news, watch music videos on integrated apps such as Video Play or YouTube Music and live-stream radio, and listen to podcasts from top radio stations.

Vodacom says the app has attracted over 1.3 million visitors.

“The music industry has changed rapidly in recent times in that everything now lives digitally,” says Rehana Hassim, portfolio manager for music at Vodacom.

“Through My Muze, Vodacom is reaffirming its commitment to the music industry by making it easier to put your music out there and be discovered, find new talent and music, or build up a brand in a landscape that is becoming increasingly competitive.”

Vodacom’s venture into the local music scene came a few months after rival MTN launched its music service Music Time, which it called "a world first offering”, in December 2018.

Music Time is a time-based music-streaming service, offering users premium trending and locally relevant music through partnerships with key music labels and content providers.

Other competitors of My Muze include Spotify, TIDAL and Apple Music, which all have a large reach and massive music catalogues.

In March, Google-owned video-streaming service YouTube launched its music-streaming platform YouTube Music Premium to South Africa, replacing the company's other music-streaming service, Google Music.

Vodacom says a distinguishing factor is that My Muze gives aspiring musicians the opportunity to widely expose their talents, as they can upload their music, with the prospect of being discovered and signed-up with a music record label.

It is also designed to curate the music experiences of ordinary citizens into a single destination, empowering young or new artists and ensuring access to music – a passion shared by most people across the country – and all things associated to the industry.

“By integrating all things music into one place, My Muze offers convenience and simplicity in a way that gets you what you want, when you want it, without the need for several different apps, saving space on your device and transforming the way people consume content,” adds Hassim.

“We also hope to attract new young consumers, to whom music remains one of the biggest passion points, providing various ways to engage with and consume the music they love.”

The app is available across all networks, although Vodacom subscribers can browse the platform without using any data.

My Muze is partner to the 2019 South African Music Awards and allows consumers to digitally cast their vote on My Muze for the Record of the Year accolade.
