Many large enterprises are already reaping the benefits of robotic process automation (RPA), eliminating manual tasks, saving money, and freeing workers to work on higher-value activities. Now it’s time integrate RPA with cognitive computing and embrace a digital workforce.

This is according to Automation Anywhere, which will be presenting a webinar, in conjunction with ITWeb, on transforming businesses with RPA and cognitive automation on 13 November. The webinar is aimed at decision-makers who are interested in deploying a digital workforce using RPA software bots – or digital workers - in their organisations.

Cognitive computing is when a machine can simulate human behaviour, explains Automation Anywhere co-founder and chief revenue officer, Ankur Kothari. “It uses techniques such as machine learning, data mining, pattern recognition, and natural language processing to mimic the way the human brain works. Artificial intelligence, for example, is an area of cognitive computing that allows intelligent machines to work, think, and react like humans.”

Kothari points out the difference between RPA and cognitive computing and - it’s the difference between doing and thinking.

“The processes in the back office of a business are a combination of executing action-oriented steps and making decisions. RPA can automate the steps, while cognitive computing takes care of the decisions. And RPA plus cognitive together are much more powerful than just RPA alone.”

Using RPA plus cognitive enables a business to get more work done with fewer humans, improve the accuracy and quality of results, and even enhance compliance because the bot can be configured to follow rules and regulations precisely.

But, according to Kothari, this doesn’t mean disaster for human workers. A study by Lacity and Willcocks of the Cutter Consortium found that deploying cognitive bots was actually a ‘triple win’, for customers, shareholders and employes.

Customers derive value from improved quality of service and faster delivery, while shareholders derive value from greater operational efficiency. But it was the employee benefits that surprised the researchers: workers whose jobs were affected by RPA actually reported higher levels of job satisfaction. “That’s because the dreary, repetitive aspects of their jobs were eliminated, and they were assigned to higher-level, strategic jobs that took advantage of their human strengths,” concludes Kothari.

Companies employ a digital workforce for a number of reasons, with the need to cut costs, eliminate human error, improve compliance and auditability being the ones in the forefront for its adoption. Also; the adoption of a digital workforce by an organisation increases morale as there are less errors in the workplace.

The Automation Anywhere Future of Work Webinar will explore how leading enterprises around the world are deploying a combination of RPA and cognitive technologies to automate the more complex and critical business processes. Attendees will learn how to identify a business case for cognitive automation and get ready to embrace humans and bots working together.
