Twitter shows SA’s top ‘tweet’ moments
A marriage proposal at the local KFC, a J’Something rendition of popular song ‘Shesha Geza’ and the Springboks win at the World Cup Rugby finals have come out tops in Twitter’s year-end reflection.
The popular social media network yesterday released its list of some of the big talking points among South Africans in 2019, saying the year on Twitter in the country belonged to #KFCProposal, J Something, the Springboks and viral memes like O jewa ke eng and sco pa tu manaa.
O jewa ke eng is a Sesotho phrase which translated to English means ‘what is eating you’ – the account holder provided a platform for users to share their issues and speak out on some of the things that are bothering them.
According to Twitter, the question prompted thousands of people to share what’s on their minds. One of them, a young man in Johannesburg, ended up finding a job through Twitter.
“Conversation is Twitter’s superpower, so it’s no surprise that open-ended questions and viral memes like “sco pa tu manaa” and “bomboclaat” dominated this year’s most-retweeted-with-comment’ list globally.”
To determine the findings in terms of most discussed categories, Twitter says instead of ranking by overall tweet volume, it ranked by the number of people tweeting about each topic. “We wanted to know what got the most people talking, not just what was the loudest.”
