Local technology pioneer Andile Ngcaba, and futurist and virtual reality expert Cathy Hackl are among the more than 40 international speakers set to headline the 2020 edition of the SingularityU SA Summit.

SingularityU is a global community using emerging technologies to tackle the world's greatest challenges. The summits are held around the globe to help local leaders understand how innovative tech can be used to create positive change and economic growth in their region.

In an online media briefing yesterday, SingularityU South Africa announced 40 speakers that will address Africa at the first virtual SingularityU South Africa Summit, which be held on 14 and 15 October.

Themed “Future-Proof Africa”, the two-day conference aims to highlight the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), digital biology, robotics, blockchain and other exponential technologies in healthcare, security, design and finance.

The presentation format has been revised for the 2020 summit, with shorter talks making way for deeper engagement online with less screen-fatigue and a broader variety of topics to be covered.

The summit will also feature an online expo area, where delegates can engage with the latest products and developments from exhibitors and network with business leaders.

The line-up includes thought leaders from across the globe, including the US, Denmark, Netherlands and Australia, and includes South African captains of the ICT industry who will demystify exponential technologies and share the latest insights.

Ngcaba,a South African businessman who has devoted most of his life and career to the field of technology, is founding partner and chairman of investment group Convergence Partners Investments. He will discuss how AI can effectively be used by governments across the globe.

Vivienne Ming, American neuroscientist and founder of Socos Labs, will address how AI can make us all better humans. Hackl, who was named one of the Top Voices in Technology in 2019 by LinkedIn,will explain the impact of emerging technologies on business, while Australian AI expert Kellie Nuttall will speak about AI and the future of work.

Leadership, disruption and innovation expert David Roberts will discuss how to be a strategic, empathetic leader in the new world.

“We are thrilled to have assembled a stellar line-up of trailblazers from around the world to headline the fourth annual SingularityU South Africa Summit, showcasing the ground-breaking technologies and innovations that are available to take the continent forward,” said Mic Mann, co-CEO of SingularityU South Africa.

“This year’s summit will make a meaningful contribution to developing human capital in Africa, and work to enhance the quality of life through education, networking and an exponential mindset.”

The SingularityU South Africa Summit 2020 will be hosted in collaboration with the Development Bank of Southern Africa, global partner Deloitte and strategic partner MTN.

It will also have a line-up of female headline speakers who will discuss healthcare and education-related issues. Physician and futurist Dr Divya Chander will address human brain interfaces. Journalist and educator Esther Wojcicki will talk to after-school learning. South African healthcare entrepreneur Kim Hulett, who intrigued last year with her talk on designer babies, will return this year to tackle the future of healthcare, while American Tiffany Vora will present an international perspective on this topic.
