BEA Systems, the e-commerce transactions company, and Rational Software, the e-development company, have signed an agreement to form a global alliance to provide tighter integration of the AEBEA WebLogic product family with Rational`s e-development lifecycle tools.
The alliance is expected to coordinate the commitment of both companies to provide solutions based on industry-standard Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB)and other Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EETM) technologies.
Rational is represented in South Africa by CCH Software Development and BEA by Safika Holdings.
As a result of this alliance, BEA and Rational will collaborate to provide a comprehensive set of tools that integrate Rational software e-development lifecycle technologies with BEA WebLogic Application Server, BEA WebLogic Commerce Server, and BEA WebLogic Personalization Server technologies. Leveraging these advanced tools, companies can quickly bring to market e-commerce applications that take advantage of BEA`s high availability and seamless failover, enterprise-class scalability, personalisation and security capabilities.
"Rational e-development tools are optimal for quickly creating, changing and deploying e-business applications on the BEA platform," says Themi Themistocleous, director of local Rational distributor CCH Software Development. "The BEA WebLogic family is the industry`s most advanced EJB application server technology and enables companies to build customer-driven e-businesses in Internet time. The result of this collaboration is an unprecedented opportunity for developers to create flexible, personalised e-business applications that bring companies closer to their customers while attracting new ones."
Showcasing the results
BEA and Rational have showcased currently available integrations and synergies between the BEA WebLogic product family and Rational`s e-development tools for visual modelling, functional and load testing, and software configuration management.
These included:
Application assembly using Rational Rose. Leveraging the BEA WebLogic Commerce Server SmartGenerator with Rational Rose, developers can "wire together" components to create an e-commerce application. Rational Rose allows the application assembler to use unified modelling language (UML) to define the application`s EJB component workflow, or the sequence in which components are called in the application, as well as how information is passed between components. Rational Rose is a prerequisite technology for developers using UML modelling with BEA WebLogic Commerce Server.
Configuration and change management using Rational ClearCase and ClearQuest. ClearCase provides comprehensive version control and other software configuration management functionality for artefacts such as EJB components, Java source files, and HTML. ClearQuest provides a way to manage changes required as a result of enhancement requests, bugs, and documentation changes.
Moving forward, BEA and Rational will develop a joint technology integration roadmap to tightly integrate BEA and Rational software solutions to provide customers with better tested and more reliable customer application systems.
These new tools and integrations will enable software teams to seamlessly design, develop, test and deploy the next generation of enterprise-scale e-business applications. Solutions collaboratively created by BEA and Rational will be marketed and delivered by both companies separately and, where appropriate, jointly.
