Mobile device management and the cloud
ITR Technology announces mobile device management going broader and more application-focused, while the Cloud Edition also delivers simplified mobile device management; scalable, on-demand solution supports iOS, Android and Windows platforms.
The bring your own device (BYOD) phenomenon has quickly gone from emerging trend to par for the course in most organisations, but the uptake of what has been coined mobile device management (MDM) still has a way to go.
The cloud, however, just might be the key to accelerated adoption.
ManageEngine recently announced a cloud edition of its Mobile Device Manager Plus MDM software, which provides IT administrators an on-demand service they easily scale to manage devices across the organisation. Already available for on-premises deployment, ManageEngine president Raj Sabhlok said putting MDM in the cloud is "a proverbial no-brainer".
The company is seeing customers become more comfortable with cloud-based applications, according to Sabhlok.
"It's that much easier to go online, access the application, (and) get phones enrolled and configured," he said, without worrying about application installation and management.
But, while the cloud may be emerging as the logical platform for MDM, companies have been slow to deploy any form of it, he said, with average adoption rates currently below 50%.
"In terms of having a mentality of managing these devices, we're behind."
Sabhlok said ManageEngine is seeing some positive momentum in the market. The cloud edition of Mobile Device Manager Plus enables IT administrators to manage and monitor mobile devices and applications through a dashboard. And it's not just smartphones, he said, it's any endpoint. Features include stringent restriction policies for securing apps and devices, containerisation of corporate data for BYOD and corporate-owned personal devices, and integration with Exchange ActiveSync for syncing business e-mails.
"We need to approach security of newer devices just like desktops."
More recently, ManageEngine, the real-time IT management company, today announced the immediate availability of the cloud edition of Mobile Device Manager Plus, its MDM software solution. The move gives IT administrators an on-demand service they can easily adopt and scale to manage their organisations' mobile devices. The company also announced the Mobile Device Manager Plus Free Edition now supports up to 25 devices, whether the software is deployed on-premises or in the cloud.
"Managing mobile devices beyond the LAN requires some time-consuming set-up procedures," said Mathivanan Venkatachalam, director of product management, Desktop and Mobile Management, ManageEngine. "The cloud edition of Mobile Device Manager Plus completely automates those processes as it does away with download, installation and set-up."
In globalised workplaces, Mobile Device Manager Plus Cloud Edition further simplifies MDM by enabling IT administrators to manage mobile devices anytime, anywhere. The cloud edition provides an enterprise-grade solution to provision and secure an organisation's mobile resources as well as employee-owned (BYOD) devices. The product's comprehensive dashboard enables admins to monitor mobile devices and apps.
Other highlights include:
* Stringent restriction policies for securing apps and mobile devices;
* Containerisation of corporate data for BYOD and corporate-owned personal devices;
* Integration with Exchange ActiveSync for syncing business e-mails;
* Secure network access through WiFi and VPN configurations;
* Volume purchase programs to simplify bulk app purchases; and
* Intuitive dashboard to give timely updates on device and app compliance.
