New country manager for IBM SA

Johannesburg, 12 Jul 2012

New York Stock Exchange-listed IBM has appointed a new country manager for SA.

Abraham Thomas, who succeeds Oliver Fortuin, took up his new role as country GM yesterday. Fortuin, who is leaving IBM to establish his own business, will remain with the company until the end of the month, or longer, depending on the transition phase.

Fortuin has been IBM's local country head for three years, before which he was HP's country manager between November 2008 and May 2009. He headed HP's Technology Services Group since April 2007 and was previously responsible for HP's services and outsourcing business.

Prior to joining HP, Fortuin had spent a decade with IBM.

Most recently, Thomas was VP of Systems and Technology Group, for IBM's Growth Markets Unit, based in Shanghai. He has a Business Administration degree from the National University of Singapore.

IBM, which last year celebrated 100 years in existence, reported first quarter net income of $3.1 billion, compared with $2.9 billion year-on-year. Total revenue for the first three months of the year was 1% higher, at $24.7 billion.
