SITA to `champion` expansion of business opportunities

Johannesburg, 20 Sep 1999

At a function held in Johannesburg on Friday, Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, minister of public and administration, discussed the role the State IT Agency (SITA) plays with regards to the transformation of public service and administration.

"SITA has no mandate to do business in the private sector nor to compete with it. Its mandate is to increase the ability, speed and competency of the public service administration along business lines," she said.

Fraser-Moleketi added that it is within the mandate of the Ministry of Public Service and Administration to determine the IT and information system requirements for all national departments and provincial administrations.

"Therefore, the key element of SITA, created outside the public service as a company, is to support national departments and provinces regarding IT functions, products and services."

Fraser-Moleketi stressed the fact that the services of the private sector will be utilised whenever it is deemed to be cost-effective and to the benefit of the government.

"Because the government remains committed to nurturing public-private-partnerships in the IT industry, SITA will champion the expansion of business opportunities for all role-players in the industry.

"In the furtherance of these partnerships, SITA must increase efficiency by pooling resources, reducing costs and improving service delivery to the public."
