Absa Bank and Dimension Data have formed a non-exclusive strategic alliance, valued at R100 million per annum, which will see the e-business network integrator servicing the bank`s customer-facing needs.
[VIDEO]The deal stems from Absa`s long-term IT vision, which has seen it set up similar relationships with US-based companies Cisco and IBM. IBM`s role focuses on the back-end and mainframe systems, while Cisco`s relationship with Absa tackles e-commerce challenges.
"[The model] enables us to enter into a few select IT alliances with IT companies that want to be number one or number two in the world in their markets," says Bert Griesel, Absa Group executive director.
"Absa`s IT model, devised in collaboration with AT Kearney, allows for technology alliances with key players in the market, where appropriate. We want to remain flexible and focus on our core competencies."
The first project undertaken in terms of the alliance will involve the upgrading of Absa`s call centre technology and digital delivery channels, namely telephonic, Internet and cellphone banking.
"We`ve done a number of projects for Absa in the past, but we have never been involved in the strategy," says Jeremy Ord, Dimension Data chairman and CEO. "Once we are engrained in the strategy, we can help develop products and services for Absa. It`s a very important relationship for us."
Under the terms of the agreement, the strategic alliance will see the two companies share strategic information. "In the new relationship, Dimension Data will be able to gain a deeper level of understanding of Absa`s business requirements in the e-business and IT arena, and be in a position to provide professional services and the relevant technology to address these requirements," says Ord.
