Threats, corruption derail R100m SARS tender

The South African Revenue Services (SARS) today announced that it has scrapped a tender for the provision of desktop hardware worth R100 million, after further evidence of corruption in the process was uncovered.

Since last week`s announcement of the discovery of tampering by an outside agency, offering to influence the outcome in one of the bidders` favour, attempts have been made to threaten, corrupt and intimidate SARS staff members.

"We have communicated this message to all the bidders for the tender," said Pravin Gordhan, SARS commissioner, at a press briefing this afternoon. "We have warned that anyone found interfering with a legitimate procurement process would be disqualified and blacklisted."

A hotline number has been dedicated for anybody either inside or outside SARS to report any information pertaining to this tender process, 0800 0028 70.
