CIDA City Campus, SA`s virtually free higher education tertiary institution, has held its first graduation ceremony.
The institution awarded 113 ICT Academy students with IT Technician Learnership Level 4 certificates and 83 graduates received their BA degrees at a ceremony in Johannesburg yesterday.
ISETT SETA CEO Oupa Mopaki said at the event that when the ICT Academy was launched four years ago, it had set a 75% pass as its target.
"We are proud to have exceeded the 75% target with a 97% pass rate; 60% of the graduates are already employed and we are confident that the remaining 40% will soon be employed," he said.
The ICT Academy has grown from 117 to 252 students during the past four years.
CIDA also announced that 500 new students will receive scholarships, and encouraged students with exceptional potential but not the financial means to apply.
Mopaki said the 500 new students who receive scholarships will have access to quality higher education.
Professor Njabulo Ndebele, vice-chancellor of UCT, announced that a new CIDA campus will be opened in Cape Town next year.
Congratulating the graduates, CIDA co-founder and CEO Taddy Blecher said: "Today goes down as a historic occasion for all CIDA`s graduates whose names will be written as pioneers of our institution. Remember your qualification is your bridge to economic regeneration."
