Motorola has invested R1 million in local development centres to help communities learn to use ICT.
This forms part of the company`s corporate social investment campaign.
"Motorola is optimistic about SA and is focused on getting behind the future leaders of this country through educational empowerment," says Stephen Nolan, country manager for Motorola Sub-Saharan Africa.
"SA urgently needs to focus on bridging the education divide. We have very bright individuals in this country, just waiting for opportunities to develop skills that will make them world-class players," says Nolan.
The money is allocated across six different projects and will be split between the following educational centres:
* The Ulwazi E-Learning Project
* JL Zwane Centre
* Programme for Technological Careers
* Central Johannesburg College`s Troyville ICT Centre
* City of Johannesburg Region 3 Youth Techno Social Development Centre
* Desmond Tutu Peace Trust`s Women in Leadership Development Programme
"The projects were carefully selected by the Motorola Foundation and all evaluated with a specific goal in mind - empowering South Africans," says Nolan.
"We have already had encouraging results from initiatives such as The Ulwazi E-Learning Project and have seen the potential of such projects to address previous imbalances within the educational system.
"Education has the potential to be elevated to levels never seen before in this country. All that is needed is vision, the belief and investment from South African corporations to make it happen."
