At a ceremony in Johannesburg this week, Mirriam Zwane, director of Praxis Computing, became the first black woman to win the Workgroup Businesswoman of the Year Award.

"I`m excited, I didn`t expect to win. I won a few awards last year and I was not prepared for this one," she says.

"I think the reason I was chosen was due to the amount of work I do for community social initiatives. I believe in changing people`s lives by participating and working beyond the call of duty, without simply donating money and moving away."

Zwane says she wasn`t of the nomination and only found out about it when the organisers notified her.

In 2003, Zwane received the African Diva Award and the African ICT Achievers Award for the Most Progressive ICT Company.

Praxis Computing was also recently nominated as one of Business Day`s Top 20 Non-Listed Companies and Impumelelo`s Top 300 Empowerment Companies.

Zwane says she is involved in a number of social development projects, including the Vuk`zenzele Skills and Training Project, the Youth Development Trust mentorship programmes, Life After Prison and AIDS Link.
