CommunITy Chest hands over collected goods

Johannesburg, 28 Nov 2005

Intel`s first CommunITy Chest drive, to collect unused promotional goods for charity has raised over 1 000 items.

Intel SA started the drive in September, calling on the local IT industry to donate unused promotional items, such as branded clothing, for the less fortunate.

"Considering the amount of branded give-aways the IT community generates each year, of which a large percentage is never used, we felt it was time to encourage IT companies to join in the plight and clean out their storerooms and cupboards to make a significant difference to people not as fortunate as ourselves," says Jacques van Schalkwyk, regional manager of Intel South and Sub-Saharan Africa.

All participating companies and individuals "eagerly accumulated unwanted promotional clothing", Intel says. The items were dropped off at Annex, Axiz, Mustek and Rectron offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban between 26 September and 31 October.

The drive raised branded clothing, pens, bags and even toys. At an official handover at Gallagher Estate, 15 boxes of items were given to the Salvation Army, four to the SA Golf Development Board and two to Thembisa High School.
