The recent promulgation of the Electronic Communications (EC) Act will see more and more security and storage companies banding together, says Rob Watson, head of security business development at StorTech.
"With the passing of the EC Act, e-mail and other document storage has become a huge security issue in terms of compliance," explains Watson. "There will be more and more storage and security companies banding together to provide a more complete solution to clients."
Symantec and StorTech recently jointly developed compliance evaluation software that demystifies storage and security issues relating to compliance, he says.
"There is no specific law that says e-mail has to be kept, but it is imperative for businesses to do so for many reasons," explains Jonathan de Magalh~aes, Symantec`s availability product manager.
For example, he says the law could require information to be found within a specific time for certain reference purposes and it could be detrimental to a company if it has not been retained.
According to recent research, 79% of companies accept e-mail as written confirmation of approvals, orders and other transactions, and Enterprise Strategy Group research shows 75% of a company`s intellectual property is now contained in e-mail.
"In the past, security and storage have been managed separately. It no longer makes sense to do it that way as compliance has become the glue holding the two together," Watson concludes.
