Talk 702's John Robbie will tomorrow urge businesses to contribute to the costs of additional biometric devices for the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The MorphoTouch mobile biometric devices have been credited with the arrests of many people, said Robbie this morning. However, only 400 of SA's 12 000 police stations have such devices.

Used by SAPS since 2002, the Sagem-made devices are linked to the organisation's fingerprint identification system.

Captain Percy Morokane told ITWeb earlier this year that the system is mostly used at roadblocks and during intelligence-driven cordon-and-search operations.

"That piece of equipment has revolutionised the way suspects are treated," he said.

Last week, Robbie proposed the idea of raising money to sponsor MorphoTouch units, valued at R45 000. After discussions with the police, he spoke to National Treasury to establish the best way to go about getting more units into police circulation.

"Some people are asking why our taxes aren't paying for these systems; quite frankly I don't care. We need to get them now; we need to get them into play to catch criminals," said Robbie this morning.

"These are vital; suspects can be stopped and identified by the system immediately. We hope to get at least 20 out of tomorrow's campaign," he added on air.

Individuals, businesses and communities can call into Talk Radio 702 tomorrow morning to make their donations. The broadcaster will buy the systems and make the donation to SAPS.
