Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has rubbished speculation by an international analyst that the company may be for sale.

Last week, international technology analyst Doug Freedman was quoted by eWeek technology news site as saying graphics card developer Nvidia might entertain a buyout of AMD. He added that IBM may also have an interest in acquiring AMD.

However, Jon Carvill, head of AMD global communications group, dismisses these claims as rumours. "There is no truth to any of the speculation." He says the company remains firmly grounded and will continue to consolidate its core business.

AMD's focus remains the expansion and development of the business globally, he adds. According to Carvill, since AMD opened a local office mid last year, the growth in the local market has been excellent. "The ATI business has done particularly well in the African market."

AMD SA country manager Imi Mosaheb says the company has shown quarter-on-quarter growth of about 30% in the region - up to and including the last quarter of 2007. "We are managing to make headway in the channel, and our marketing has served us well. We are looking forward to good growth in SA throughout this year."

He says the company is also expecting to increase its presence in other parts of Africa, beginning in East Africa in the middle of this year. "We are starting a discovery phase to find the right in Africa, which will be the basis for how we take AMD forward on the continent," says Mosaheb.
