Criminals take advantage of technology

The First National (FNB) annual ATM Week ended with a warning: although ATMs have become a common and convenient part of modern commerce, criminals continue to work overtime to take advantage of such technology.

In an effort to reduce , FNB aims to educate consumers about ATM security, highlighting the latest tactics used by criminals to take advantage of unsuspecting individuals.

FNB strives to stay one step ahead of the criminals and alert customers to the latest scams, says Mark Arnold, CEO of banking solutions.

Some new tricks customers need to watch out for are card swapping, a technique where distraction is used to swap a card at an ATM, and card skimming whereby a fraudster swipes a card through a device, copying the consumer`s personal details, he says.

Arnold advises customers to be aware of anything suspicious attached to the ATM before inserting the card.

"Never force your card into the card slot. If you find yourself forcing a card into the machine, chances are the ATM was tampered with," he says.
