Intel today introduced its latest Pentium 4 (P4) processor, running at 1.7GHz. Computer-makers around the world will launch systems based on the new processor, which is available immediately.
The P4 features Intel`s NetBurst micro-architecture, which gives the company more headroom for increasing performance then the previous P6 micro-architecture.
The chip will run with Intel`s 850 chipset, which supports dual RDRAM memory banks running at 400MHz, the same speed as the P4 system bus. This results in a data rate of up to 3.2GBps between the chip and the RAM.
"The Pentium 4 processor is destined to become the centre of the digital world," says Calum Chisholm, channel business manager, Intel South Africa. "Whether encoding video and MP3 files, doing financial analysis, or experiencing the latest Internet technologies - the Pentium 4 processor is designed to meet the needs of all types of users."
Intel is also shipping the Intel D850GB ATX motherboard in high volume, in support of the Pentium 4 processor. Boxed versions of the P4 have gone out to its premier providers and product dealers.
