Go 630 coming this month

Navigational and maps company TomTom will bring its Go 630 Series navigation devices to South African shores.

This might see a further increase in the company's local product sales, which grew from 1% in September last year to 23% in February, says TomTom SA country manager, Joost Jetten.

The device, which will be available in stores from 27 April, includes new functionality, such as pre-installed door-to-door maps for Southern Africa as well as a safety camera database. This will indicate to motorists where safety cameras are and when they are approaching these cameras.

“We are happy to bring the Go Series functionality to South Africans at a very low price point and think it is a rather attractive opportunity for cost-conscious drivers,” says Jetten.

Apart from the normal features of the Go Series devices, such as MapShare, hands-free calling and text-to-speech capability, the Go 630 will also ship with the new EasyPort windscreen mount.

Jetten says the Go 630 already supports IQ routing, which is technology based on actual average speeds on roads, rather than the sign-posted speed limits. This means if road signs say the speed limit is 60km/h, but the actual speed of the road is only 40km/h, travelling time is calculated according to the average speed of the road (40km/h).

“Although IQ routing is not yet available in SA, the GO 630 supports this functionality, so that when it is available, possibly next year, users won't have to upgrade their devices,” Jetten adds.

The Go 630 Series will sell for R3 299.
