MIH, the Nasdaq- and Amsterdam Stock Exchange-listed subsidiary of JSE-listed MIHH, has taken its first step into Application Protocol (WAP). WAP.MWEB, an Internet business in Thailand, will offer a WAP gateway to Thai cellphone users.

MWEB (Thailand), MIHL Thailand subsidiary, says it is the first Internet company in the country to offer an Internet service to Thai cellphone users.

The company has set up a WAP gateway and developed WAP applications to allow consumers to check and send e-mail or access infotainment through their cellphones.

MWEB hosts Web sites including Sanook.com, Thaiicq and Thaicentral. The site at http://wap.mweb.co.th is its portal for WAP-enabled cellphones. WAP phone users get free access to the Web site by paying normal cellphone air-time rates. Users can access infotainment, M-interactive and M-commerce via the site.

"Currently the mobile phone market in Thailand is larger than the PC market," says MIH group Internet CEO, Hans Hawinkels. "This provides us with an attractive opportunity to offer Internet services to mobile phone users. Thailand as a country is ideally suited to take advantage of leading-edge technology like WAP."
