Go Open Source is establishing its channel programme with two-day workshops being held around the country.

The workshops aim to establish and understand business models for open source software (OSS) support and kick off tomorrow at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The Go Open Source campaign has committed R3 million to the project and most of the money will go into marketing of the software. "This means those who switch to OSS are assured of marketing support," says Go Open Source project manager Tjipo Mothobi.

"The workshops will define to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) what the expectations are in the software market. These workshops will also provide SMEs with skills in finance and marketing," says Mothobi.

She says about 1 000 computer software support service specialists working for SMEs stand to benefit from a series of workshops and intensive training in OSS, spearheaded by Go Open Source.

The three-month training programme, starting in May, will see Linux engineers receiving an internationally recognised certificate, says Mothobi.

She adds that the training will cost R13 500 per person and the engineers will be selected from the workshop participants.

"Players interested in the value proposition offered by open source solutions will be offered training for their engineers and support staff at dramatically reduced rates," says Go Open Source.

"Increasingly, corporations and schools are migrating to OSS and government is committed to using the free software, therefore creating opportunities for software engineers with skills in OSS," says Mothobi.
