More telephone network fraud arrests

Police have arrested 10 foreign nationals in connection with alleged telephone in the North West Province. The latest arrest brings to 37 the number of foreign nationals arrested in the past three weeks in connection with illegal telephone use.

Telkom says its Security and Investigations Unit has been working closely with police to crack down on telephone network , which costs Telkom millions of rand a year. In the first crackdown in mid-May, 15 illegal scams were identified, 27 suspects were arrested and 11 cases opened. A further 13 illegal operations have now been uncovered, with 10 foreign nationals from various African countries - including Senegal, Burundi and Tanzania - apprehended in the past week.

Telkom says the syndicates conduct their activities by operating illegal telephone "exchanges", in which they tap into private and public telephone lines, and sell calls - some to international destinations - at cheaper rates.

Peter Ross, Telkom`s security and investigations head, expressed delight at the rate network fraudsters are being arrested.
