The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has called for bids by member nations to host the forthcoming round of regional events.

The ITU is calling for bids for its Telecom Africa 2007 event, Telecom Asia and Telecom Americas 2008 and for its flagship conference, ITU Telecom World 2009.

The organisation also announced a new event focused on its European region, which encompasses some of the world`s most sophisticated ICT markets alongside several newer emerging economies.

The aim of these events is to bring together ICT players from both industry and government, in order to explore the opportunities offered by a particular region, and to enable regional companies to showcase their products and services to the world.

"ITU telecom events provide a crucial arena for key names in the ICT industry to come together and reflect on the trends that are shaping our markets," says Sean Maloney, executive VP at Intel.

"They are a great opportunity to openly debate the issues we all face and move the industry forward, as well as a chance to see all the great new technologies and services being rolled out in our industries."

The ITU is calling on member states in the African, Asian and Americas regions to submit bids for hosting the upcoming events, as well as inviting all member states to bid for the Telecom World event in 2009.

Bids for events will be examined on several criteria, including level of support pledged by the government, venue pricing and infrastructure, hotel capacity and pricing, transportation links, urban public transport, ICT infrastructure, and exhibitor interest in participating in the event.

This year`s Telecoms Americas event will be held in October in Salvador da Bahia in Brazil, while next year`s Telecom World event will be hosted in Hong Kong, China in December 2006.
