convergence, mobile TV and the emergence of the digital community are the mobile trends on which actionable and commercial propositions can be built.

Tomi Ahonen, consultant and author of 3G-related books including "m-Profits: Making Money from 3G Services", will discuss these trends at the First Tuesday "Vodacom Mobile Connect" event. It is being held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Tuesday, 1 August.

Ahonen says digital convergence should not be confused with fixed-mobile convergence. The "bigger picture" includes telecoms, Internet and media, he says. Korea is cited as a good example of progressive digital convergence, and highlights new service opportunities and "know-how gaps" for South African entrepreneurs.

He refers to mobile TV as the seventh mass media after the likes of print, TV and Internet. He predicts a massive scope of services, which will dwarf "typical" services such as sports highlights and news feeds. The emergence of the digital community as an economic and social power will also introduce new opportunities to capitalise on telecoms networks, says Ahonen.

First Tuesday says the event will uncover and outline opportunities for mobile industry players, business and entrepreneurs. Interested parties can register at www.firsttuesday.co.za.
