Lunchtime pickets outside Telkom offices were not well supported yesterday, but action is expected to pick up and intensify today and on Monday, says a union.
Almost 9 000 Communication Workers Union (CWU) members at Telkom were expected to picket at the company yesterday, during lunch, over a wage dispute.
However, CWU chief negotiator Richard Poulton says action was limited as the rules were only agreed to late on Wednesday night. He says staff mostly picketed in Gauteng, with much of the protest limited to Telkom's national monitoring centre in Centurion.
Poulton says the union is set to sit down with Telkom on Monday at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, which might avoid a full-blown strike.
Telkom has not received any reports of picketing and it is “business as usual”, says a spokesman.
