Internet Solutions (IS) has established a data centre in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), which the company says forms part of its plans to boost its hosted business.
IS says the new 250m^2 centre in Umhlanga is critical to its partnership with the eThekwini municipality and the council's participation in the roll-out of metro fibre in the region.
“The launch of the new KZN data centre supports our current national and African expansion strategy,” says Greg Montjoie, hosting business unit manager at IS.
He says the municipality has invested heavily in provisioning its own core fibre-optic cable network infrastructure, allowing it to self-provide its own connectivity services. “The fibre project allows us to offer more cost-effective, fully integrated and aggregated hosted and managed services to local businesses that utilise this backbone.”
The new centre has capacity to scale up to 400m^2 and is built on an already existing 200m^2 premises.
“The KZN region has a strong base, with many industrial businesses and a well developed corporate community in Umhlanga, especially in the FMCG sector. We have, therefore, made a substantial investment into the KZN market, to the point where we now have the biggest hosting and managed services presence in the region,” adds Montjoie.
IS has 40 staff members in Durban.
The company says it is expecting a boom in the hosted market in the coming months, thanks to the launch of the Seacom undersea cable. “The cable lands in Mtunzini and connects to Johannesburg and Durban, which will enable us to backhaul certain services over this infrastructure.
The company says it is positioned to accommodate the expected increase in demand from the new La Mercy airport, and associated residential and commercial development when it all comes online.
