A few years ago, Pick n Pay trialled self-service checkouts, but met resistance from workers worried about job losses, and it ultimately shelved the project. Before the pandemic, Ster-Kinekor successfully managed to transition its front line of multiple cashier desks to self-service touchscreens, with a couple of employees on hand to assist. More recently, Checkers has announced it is emulating the Amazon Go store concept, where there’s not even a need to scan items; everything is picked up on camera as it’s placed in the basket and billed directly to the shopper’s account. The correlation between automation and job losses has long been a concern, especially in South Africa, but there are many advantages for an organisation to introduce automation, and, in truth, it doesn’t have to lead to worker redundancy.
Brainstorm, in association with Red Hat, wants to understand the levels of automation across your organisation, and attitudes towards it. In this C-suite Intel questionnaire, we’re seeking to gauge familiarity and how automation is being perceived in the business. We’ve created a short questionnaire consisting of multiple-choice questions and open field responses. This online questionnaire will be used to create infographics and an accompanying short editorial piece that will be published in an upcoming edition of Brainstorm magazine. The multiple-choice questions will not be attributed to you, and if you are comfortable completing the open field responses, we’d like to consider them as part of the editorial article.
This questionnaire will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.
Thank you for your time and input!
