Airline coping with traffic

Its call centre is coping with the increased amount of people phoning in to find out about delayed flights, says SA's flagship airline, South African Airways (SAA).

Flights in and out of Europe were grounded last week, after Icelandic Volcano Eyjafjallajokull erupted, causing ash to spew all over Europe and making it unsafe for airlines to fly.

Fani Zulu, head of group corporate affairs, says the company's call centre is handling the volumes of traffic from stranded passengers looking for information.

He explains that the airline is looking for ways of improving dissemination of information, which includes updating the Web site and putting a recording on the call centre line referring passengers to the Airports Company of SA (ACSA).

However, SAA is trying to provide people with more specific information, other than the generic news as to which flights have been cancelled, Zulu says.

ACSA spokesman Unathi Batyashe-Phyllis says passengers have generally been struggling to get through to airlines. She explains that with thousands of passengers stranded, the airlines' systems are clogged.

However, she says calls coming through requesting flight information are not in the magnitude the company had expected.

Batyashe-Phyllis says volumes eased when information was made available on the Web site, and stranded passengers are also receiving news through the media.
