Amazon releases HPC apps offering

Amazon Web Services has unveiled Cluster Compute Instances for Amazon EC2, a new instance type specifically designed for high-performance computing (HPC) applications and demanding network-bound applications, states Market Watch.

Customers with complex computational workloads such as tightly coupled parallel processes, or with applications sensitive to network performance, can now achieve the same high compute and networking performance provided by custom-built infrastructure, says Amazon.

Prior to Cluster Compute Instances for Amazon EC2, organisations with advanced HPC needs have been required to fund expensive, in-house compute clusters by purchasing dedicated, purpose-built hardware, the company adds.

Toshiba touts home networking series

Toshiba is positioning its Regza UX600U LCD HDTV series as the ultimate in home networking, according to ITBusiness.ca.

"When combined with a Toshiba notebook featuring the new Toshiba Media Controller application... the UX600 series allows users to easily stream videos, music and pictures from other DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) devices," says Toshiba.

The Media Controller application can also be used on Toshiba's recently released 3D Blu-Ray laptop.

Schools deploy high-speed networks

Indus International Schools (IIS) based in Bangalore, India, is deploying high-speed adaptive 802.11n networks from Aruba across its campuses in Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune, says the Financial Post.

The new 802.11n systems are upgrades to existing Aruba 802.11abg networks.

“From the earliest days of the school we had a strategic initiative to use technology in the service of learning,” said Rakesh Pandey, director of ICT, Indus Trust. “A critical objective was to have reliable, secure and scalable networking infrastructure.”
