SA`s American Express Foreign Exchange Representative has WAP-enabled its services, allowing customers to order foreign exchange using cellular phones or personal digital assistants.
The foreign exchange quoting, ordering, tracking and management engine, Travel FX, allows for the latest exchange rate information to be sent to handheld devices on request, a foreign exchange calculator and access to branch information, among other functionalities.
Although Amex`s initial strategy was to find an off-the-shelf system and adapt it to specifications, pickings were slim. The system blueprint called for a quick and easy-to-use product that would run on multiple e-commerce platforms while providing broad customer utility and interactivity. It would also be capable of being administered from a central location.
Amex commented in a statement: "Finding nothing that was a good fit with our blueprint we created a solution with our partners, CKNet [Computers and Internet Service] and Linc Communications [a Cape Town-based company specialising in the development and implementation of WAP and third generation mobile data services].
"The result, in Travel FX, is a system that meets the demands of our clients, fulfils our administrative prerequisites and supports the scope of currently available e-commerce platforms."
"Travel FX has user-friendly customer functionality for all of our customers - individuals, corporates and travel agents. We have built Travel FX around core features that we believe serve every customer and developed functions unique to each customer group that handle specific requirements."
Through Amex`s various partnerships, Travel FX will be available on Naspers` news24.co.za, Metropolis` iafrica.com, I-Net Bridge`s intranet product and Dimension Data`s Go Zone e-commerce procurement platform.
