Former Nedcor executive Barry Hore has been appointed as GM for strategy, modernisation and technology at the South African Revenue Service (SARS). He will also assume the role of acting CIO, following the recent departure of Ken Jarvis.
Hore, who will begin at SARS on 1 July, was previously executive director of technology and operations at Nedcor, and was selected as one of the World Economic Forum's 100 Global Leaders for Tomorrow in 1999.
SARS spokesman Adrian Lackey says Hore's responsibilities will include "finding innovative ways to position SARS as a modern revenue and customs administration able to respond to changing economic conditions and meet the requirements of government's developmental agenda".
He will also oversee and manage new business modernisation initiatives to enhance systems and operations, notes Lackey.
Hore is finishing his term at Nedcor while spending progressively more time at the revenue service, Lackey explains.
"In the meantime, Hore has been seconded by Nedbank to work at SARS."
The permanent CIO position is still vacant, adds Lackey, who says SARS is still looking for a suitable candidate, following the departure of Jarvis.
Born and educated in Bulawayo, Hore graduated from the University of Natal with a BCom and joined Nedcor in 1983. He has completed the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Programme.
Hore was in a meeting this morning, and was unavailable for comment.
