Belgian telecoms giant Belgacom has found malware on some of its internal systems.
It said there is no indication of any impact on its customers or their data, and that delivery of its services has not been compromised.
Belgacom added it has filed a complaint with federal authorities, and "strongly condemns the intrusion".
Belgacom is Belgium's largest telco, and offers several voice and data services to global carriers, including leased capacity on undersea cables that carry large amounts of international traffic.
The company, which runs several undersea cables that carry international voice traffic, said a few dozen machines on its network were compromised, including some servers.
In a statement, the company said it had no idea how long the malware had been lingering on its systems, but it had taken steps to remove the offending code.
"This weekend, Belgacom successfully performed an operation in the light of its continuous action plan to protect the security of its customers and their data and to assure the continuity of its services," Belgacom added.
It added that the operation was well prepared and executed effectively. "We obviously remain vigilant towards the future, and continue to give our full support to the investigation by the federal prosecutor."
The company would not comment on the identity of the culprits or their motives. "It is up to the federal prosecutor's investigation to bring clarity on this," the statement concluded.
