BlackBerry gets BI

IBM has started selling software that lets customers access its Cognos business intelligence (BI) software via BlackBerry mobile devices, says Reuters.

Device maker Research In Motion is encouraging businesses to create software specifically for the BlackBerry so that it can boost usage beyond the e-mail, messaging, calendar and phone services for which it is best known.

The Cognos program, which sells at a list price of $300 per user, allows customers to view real-time analytics on the state of their business on their BlackBerrys.

BI spend to top $57bn

A report released by AMR Research indicates that global spending on BI and performance management (PM) applications will reach $57.1 billion in 2008, reports News Blaze.

The study, which surveyed 400 IT and business leaders across Europe, China and the US, found that the spending emphasis in BI/PM software turned to tools and infrastructure in 2008.

The study also notes a marked jump in external consulting spending (a combination of outsourced services and integration).

Microsoft adds BI competency

Microsoft is set to increase the number of competencies in its partner programme from 13 to 16 to help its channel better capitalise on emerging market opportunities, says IT Business.

Based on partner feedback and market trends, the three new competencies to be introduced to the programme will be BI, unified communications solutions and hosting solutions.

Within the BI competency will be two specialisations, the BI platform and performance management.
