New research by hard drive company Maxtor puts the number of users who absolutely never back up their PC at 46%, states Cibecs CEO, Richard Dewing. “Of the remaining users, it's safe to say up to 80% do not back up their business critical on a regular basis.”

With these statistics in mind, Cibecs is conducting a survey to gain an understanding of current backup habits and frustrations, and the kind of solutions that may be available.

The objective is to highlight the data loss organisations are exposed to. “We'd also like to impress upon business owners and IT executives the need to proactively plan for the day data goes the way of the dodo,” adds Dewing.

He explains that every individual has lost data at some stage, and has had to deal with the associated cost and frustration, resulting in different opinions on the best way to protect data. “We know backup policies don't work one iota, so we are curious to find out what the public thinks,” Dewing says.

Participants will gain a better understanding of the features and benefits their backup recovery solution should offer. “A successful disaster recovery strategy is one where offsite and onsite solutions work together, to leave IT professionals in a position to calmly and effectively respond to any challenge threatening a company's business critical data,” says Dewing.

By engaging in this survey, participants will gain an idea of where they stand. They also get a chance to win a Sony Bravia 32-inch LCD TV worth R6 000.
