The IT risk management picture has changed significantly over the past few years, not only because of new risks, but also because of changes to legislation and increased dependence on IT.
This is according to Dr Hettie Booysen, SA Revenue Services` senior manager of IT risk, who says interconnectivity and the growing role of IT within business has placed a new emphasis on the importance of IT risk management.
Booysen, who has been involved in IT risk management for 10 years, will be among the expert speakers at the ITWeb/Meta Group IT security conference next month. She will talk delegates through the challenges risk management pose for the modern CIO, highlighting the new challenges and proposing better ways of handling them.
"In managing IT risk, some of the important components are determining current exposures and planning ways to bring those risks down," she says. Her talk at the one-day conference will outline improved methods of doing this.
Booysen says she deals with risk management issues both within SARS and within local and international companies she deals with on a regular basis. "I think the challenges faced by South African companies are essentially the same as those faced by companies around the world. The operating environment, economy and legislative issues may be slightly different here, but the risks and challenges are basically the same. In many areas, SA has very advanced risk management procedures."
The ITWeb/Meta Group IT security conference will be staged at the Dimension Data campus in Midrand on 11 November. Click here to register.
