A slew of cyber security technologies are available today: firewalls, anti-virus, intrusion prevention, data leakage prevention, and many more. However, a vast number of data breaches occur due to human error.
ITWeb Security Summit 2018
Registration is open for the ITWeb Security Summit 2018 in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Ex-perts from around the world will be presenting, including global security expert Mikko Hypponen, who has been instrumental in uncovering and bringing down several infamous threats, and has assisted law enforcement agencies across the globe. In addition, several other top speakers will be sharing their knowledge, including Intel's Rodrigo Branco, who will unpack blinded random block corruption attacks for the audience. Get involved in #SS18HACK and choose from three half-day workshops or a full-day boot camp, plus five training courses, and much more. For the agenda, click here.

Cyber security is largely a human problem: employees storing data where it doesn't belong, or having access to sensitive data they don't need; people not following policies, or losing mobile devices that store confidential company data; and staff clicking on attachments in e-mails, or falling for phishing and social engineering scams.
Educating the human
Yes, cyber security requires robust technologies. But breaches still occur despite multiple tools and solutions being deployed. Security is a human problem, and for that reason, what is needed is changes to the behaviour of the people who interact with the technology.
"Our industry keeps trying to build better technology to fix the human problem in security. Instead we should be educating the human to be better at securing the technology," says Jayson Street, VP: infosec, at SphereNY.
Street will be presenting on: ''You're right this talk isn't really about you," at the ITWeb Security Summit 2018, to be held from 21 to 25 May at Vodacom World, Midrand.
Part of the solution
Businesses should be educating users in such a way that they become part of the solution, not the problem, says Street. "The question is how do we create procedures that make humans conform to security standards, and then use technology to assist that process and not overshadow it?"
Delegates attending Street's talk will come away with not just answers, but good questions they can take back to their jobs to better help them solve the human problem.
In addition, he will look at better ways to teach and interact with others, and will examine some important questions head-on to give delegates a better path for understanding the real issues they are facing.
