Nokia Siemens Networks has invested R800 000 in the development of a fibre equipment laboratory for Dartcom.
The laboratory will enable Dartcom to use an automated process in the assembling and testing of specialised interconnection fibre cables and will be set up in Irene, Pretoria.
This investment forms part of Nokia Siemens Networks' initiative to support local telecommunications operators in upgrading networks for improved streaming and distribution of content for 2010. Dartcom supplies Nokia Siemens Networks with fibre-optic cable used for communications.
“Nokia Siemens' contribution to the facility will increase our efficiency. By investing in new machinery, we can maintain the high exacting standards of our fibre-optic assemblies and improve our capacity,” says Graham Gamble, MD of Dartcom.
Nokia Siemens Networks hopes the plant will greatly reduce lead times and improve delivery. “This new line of equipment will assist Dartcom to speed up delivery, increase capacity by at least 30% and reduce lead times to four to six weeks,” says Lucky Masilela, head of corporate affairs sub region Southern Africa, Nokia Siemens Networks.
Masilela explains the greatest value of the automated system will be the reduction of reworks on fibre-optic cables. “By using an automated process, Dartcom can reduce rework processes, such as cutting, which will result in the improved quality of its cabling.”
Gamble notes the plant will add value to the community. “We have added 12 jobs for previously-disadvantaged individuals and also provided them with extensive training.”
