London- and Johannesburg-listed Datatec has bought a company in India that will serve as a stepping stone for consulting growth in the region.

The firm has several operations in India through its Westcon subsidiary. Westcon is its largest subsidiary.

Datatec has now added BDA Connect to its management consultancy subsidiary, Analysys Mason, which has not previously had a presence in India. The deal is for an undisclosed amount.

BDA Connect is a small management consultancy business, with 15 employees, based in New Delhi. The acquisition provides Datatec with a platform to develop its consulting business in India, and to support its existing operations in Singapore and Dubai.

The acquisition will also allow Analysys Mason to deliver global research coverage to its clients through BDA India's research capabilities.

“This is an important acquisition for Analysys Mason, both as a springboard into the Indian market and as a means of enhancing the scope of its global research offering,” says CEO Jens Montanana. “It also reflects our strategic intent to develop all of our businesses in emerging markets.”

Emerging growth

With the exception of Russia, Datatec is looking for opportunities to grow in Brazil, India and China, Dittrich adds.

He explains that in December the company bought NetStar, a Cisco-focused network integrator that has offices in Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and mainland China.

At the end of 2008, Datatec bought a majority share in a business in India that gives the company a presence in eight cities and offices in Singapore and Sri Lanka. Earlier in the same year, the company bought an integrator in Brazil called Promon Tecnologia, and grew its presence in Turkey and the Middle East.
