DiData deal to fast-track empowerment

The Dimension empowerment deal is likely to speed up transformation, and serves as a reminder that empowerment is well under way, says an industry expert.

Empowerdex MD Vuyo Jack says the DiData deal represents a "refreshing" view of the empowerment process. "It was carried out as more of a holistic package, rather than just a deal. It has taken procurement, management and employment equity into account. Empowerment is not just about ownership, and this deal has shown the market that."

The DiData deal involved the sale of 25% of its local business to a black-led group, headed by Andile Ngcaba.

Jack believes the deal will also spur other companies to implement their own black economic empowerment (BEE) strategies, and should speed up the empowerment process. "This deal serves as a reminder that empowerment is happening, and it also shows that BEE can have a positive impact. It is likely the deal will also increase empowerment in the sector."

With empowerment once again in the headlines, IT industry players are invited to attend a one-day workshop, How to BEE in IT, aimed at addressing major issues around the practical implementation of BEE locally.

Jack, one of the speakers at the workshop, says he will look at the different areas on the empowerment scorecard, and discuss what will drive empowerment forward.

People are generally tired of hearing the basic information regarding BEE, and there is a need for a more pragmatic approach. "People need action plans, they need to know what they have to do. There has been enough theory, now there must be action.

"BEE will not be an easy process, but it does not need to be too difficult."

The hands-on workshop, presented by ITWeb and Sondeza Transformation Holdings, will be held at The Campus in Bryanston, Johannesburg, on 15 September. Click here to find out more.
