Online portal Digital Depot, which caters to the local film and media industry, is expanding its range to include what it calls the “full digital arts spectrum” and is also opening physical outlets.
Digital Depot, which sells Apple computers, is also pondering becoming a reseller of Apple's popular iPad range, and opened its first retail outlet, in Cape Town, in March. The portal will maintain its online presence, as it sees the retail shop as an extension of what it offers the marketplace.
Sales and marketing manager, Ashleigh Martyn, says the company is only opening the Cape Town outlet for now as it aims to keep overheads low, as this maintains lower prices. “If demand in Joburg keeps growing at this pace, I might have to eat my words.”
Expanded offerings
Martyn says the company is adding to its range and will now offer products such as Adobe Software, Wacom, GoPro, CorelDraw and various new Thunderbolt devices. Digital Depot's existing range included G-Tech, LaCie, Apple Computers, Sonnet, Black Magic Design, Netstor and ATTO.
“One of our key focuses has been the film and photography industry. But we are now expanding further - into the design and animation markets - after positive feedback from these market sectors.”
Martyn says the company is still small, but carries enough stock of fast-moving items to support walk-in clients. New and more specialised items are brought in on a just-in-time basis, she adds.
Digital Depot has seen increased demand for products which people cannot find easily in consumer retail stores. “We are increasing our product range with more of these types of products based on what our customers are telling us.”
