DigitalMall takes e-tail to smaller players

DigitalMall has begun offering second tier retailers fully-fledged services.

Garin Toren, sales and marketing director, says the Worldshop section of the DigitalMall offering was launched last week, and plays host to a number of brands, including Interglass, Shimwell Design, Go , The Red Gift Bag and Giddy`s Electric Express, part of the Joshua Doore Group.

Toren says the Joshua Doore Group intends to use the service as a means to take its retail stores online, starting with the pilot venture by Giddy`s Electric Express. The company will be announcing two major new clients in weeks to come, says Toren.

DigitalMall was established in 1999, and as such, is one of the oldest pureplay companies in the South African market. Toren ascribes the company`s success to its focus on enabling customer communications for big brand retailers, and providing the back-up services such as call centre operation, fulfilment and after-sales services that make for good Internet retail.

Retailers like Wordsworth Books, Reggies, Nandos and others make use of DigitalMall`s services.

The company, which Toren describes as "the custodian of the customer interface" has seen some staff reshuffling in recent months. The sales team was let go, he says, because "there`s no salesperson born that can sell this [concept]".

The team now comprises 42 people, the majority of which are developers.

By next year, he says, DigitalMall aims to host 25 big brand retailers, and many more second tier retailers.

"There will definitely be a consolidation in the pureplay market - pureplays will be like hens` teeth by this time next year."
